Survival of the Dead review

Survival of the Dead
Directed by George A. Romero
Starring: Alan van Sprang, Kenneth Welsh, Kathleen Munroe, Richard Fitzpatrick, Athena Karkanis,

I'm not the biggest Zombie fan, but I've enjoyed such Zombie flicks as 28 Days Later, Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead and the Dawn Of The Dead remake, which is kind of a crime since I've not seen the original Dawn Of The Dead. The only films I've seen from George A. Romero has been Land Of The Dead and Diary of the Dead. I can't say I was impressed by these two. I don't know why I even rented Survival of the Dead...I guess I just wanted some good goring entertainment.

Plot

The Zombie apocalypse has begun and people are doing whatever they can to survive. A group of survivors discover a place of refuge called Plum Island. This island is inhabited by two rival families called the O'Flynns and the Muldoon's. O'Flynns want the walking dead to be rid of, while the Muldoon's believe they can train the dead to eat animal meat over human. The survivors who take refuge on this Island get caught in the middle of this family war.

The good

Some of the Zombie deaths were kinda fun and even though a lot of them were cheesy, it felt like I was watching an 80's flick, especially when the practical effects were used. All this was accompanied by some goofy parts mixed with some one liners that blended into the cheesiness nicely.

The Bad

Let's talk about the main attraction to this film, the Zombies. What can I say, they were a complete joke. I understand that Survival of the Dead was a comedy/horror, but so was Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, but the Zombies looked amazing in those. The make-up here looked like no one bothered to be creative with it. To make things even worse, they sounded terrible. I'm not kidding, remember that scene in Shaun of the Dead where everyone must act like a Zombie to get to the Winchester? Well, that's basically how the Zombies acted in this.

Some of the deaths looked good because of practical effects used and I appreciate horror more when they use these types of effects, but for some reason awful CGI was used in parts were practical effects should've been used.

Hey, maybe the acting was good, right? No. What about the script? No. I really felt like I was watching a film made by amateur film school students that got nice bit of money to spend.

Overall

This is the type of film you might really enjoy if you're drunk with some friends. But I wasn't drunk or with friends so I can't say I had too much fun. I don't know what Romero was doing in the past to have gotten the title ''Grandfather of the Zombie'', but whatever he was doing then, he needs to return to that.

Score
4/10

Ron Perlman is Conan's Daddy!

Some reports went down last week that Mickey Rourke was in talks to play Conan's father, but now Rourke has pulled out for unknown reasons and someone else has stepped in. That man is Ron Perlman, who already has history with the franchise as he voiced Conan in the animated TV show.

I can't say I'm excited about this Conan the Barbarian film and Rourke walking away doesn't inspire much confidence for the project either. Even if Rourke took the role, the guy has white skin, Jason Momoa has dark skin. Are we meant to buy that these two are father and son? The whole casting just feels like a throw away thought to me.

Predators poster

I'm back! Yes, after more than two weeks I can finally continue on writhing again. It's been a nice break, but a break I never want to have for another long time.

We kick off with this poster from Predators. I have to say this poster is disappointing. It looks like something an amateur photoshop artist put together in just a few hours. The whole right arm looks awkward as hell.

I do like the updated look of the Predators from this poster and from the sneak peak footage released a few days of ago, everything looks decent. Check out that sneak peak by clicking here.

I'll be right back!

Last few weeks have been pretty bare in terms of posting news and the reason for that is, I'm moving out, so I've been quite busy dealing with that. I should have the Internet back up and running within the next 10 days or so.

So until then friends, I'll BRB!

How much does Hugo Weaving know about the Transformers movies? Very little!

You'd think after voicing Megatron for two Transformers films, Hugo Weaving would know something about the franchise he's giving his voice to, but according to Weaving, he doesn't know much about the films at all:

As the voice of Megatron, one imagines how into the series Weaving is, but just how deeply immersed he is becomes clear when discussing the next installment.

"Oh no," he barks with a laugh. "They're not making Transformers III, are they?" Given that Transformers II made $800 million, they're probably going to have to.

"[Director] Michael Bay talks to me on the phone. I've never met him. We were doing the voice for the second one and I still hadn't seen the first one. I still didn't really know who the characters were and I didn't know what anything was. It's a voice job, for sure, and people assume I've spent my life working on it, but I really know so little about it."

I'm not surprised that Weaving doesn't know a whole lot, the guy properly had a page or two of dialogue all together. For something he might of spent the day recording, no wonder he doesn't know much about the movies.

The Wolfman finishes 3rd

I got to check out The Wolfman over this past weekend, and while it was nowhere near perfect, I still enjoyed the hell out of it. The Wolfman design looked amazing, the sets and cinematography were great and I enjoyed Anthony Hopkins performance very much. The film did drag in certain places and the characters didn't grab me emotionally. This is what happens when a film is pushed back a ton of times, footage is removed and re-shoots go down.

Box Office results have come out for this past weekend and The Wolfman(30mil) has been beaten out by none other then Valentine's Day(51mil), starring such talents as Taylor Swift, Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba. Granted it was Valentine's Day over the weekend, but come'on, these numbers are ridiculous. For shame people, for shame!
