Film Spunk 2009 awards-Robert's picks

Happy new year friends. It's now 2010 and the first post we shall unleash upon you is the Film Spunk awards. Last year I was running the site, but I have new writers aboard, so Mike will be sharing his picks for this year also, in another post.

Here are my picks.

Best film of 2009: Star Trek

I never really cared for Star Trek. I grew up watching episodes of The Next Generation here and there. I saw my first Star Trek film last year, The Wrath of Khan, which I thought was decent. So to have Star Trek as my number 1 film of the year, says something. J.J Abrams resurrected a dead franchise and turned it into something that anyone could enjoy. Star Trek had little bits of everything that made it so enjoyable for me.

Runners up
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Watchmen

Worst film of 2009: Dragonball EvolutionNever in my life have I ever been so repulsed and down right ready to puke watching a film. Dragonball Evolution made me want to punch some kittens in the face after viewing it, and I LOVE kittens. I grew up watching Dragonball/Z/GT. The material is right there to adapt, but somehow Fox screwed up. What should've of been an epic film, got turned into a cosmic mess.

Runners up
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The Haunting in Connecticut

Underrated film of 2009: Observe and Report

Seth Rogen showed me that he has more talent to him than he had in any other film his been so far. Observe and Report is a dark comedy that has enough quirks to stand on it's own from your typical run of the mill comedy. I'm quite surprised this has not been talked about more and quite a few people I know haven't even seen it. I suggest you check it out.

Runners up
Moon
Crossing Over

Actor of the year: Christoph Waltz-Inglourious Basterds
This guy did a fantastic job in Inglourious Basterds. ''The Jew Hunter'' appeared charming with minor hints of being sinister. But as the long scenes progressed, cracks of that inner sinister man lurking underneath came through, showing his through motives. Anytime Waltz was onscreen, the film became exciting, tense and each ending of a scene became unexpected.

Runners up
Sam Rockwell
Zach Galifianakis

Actress of the year: Melanie Laurent-Inglourious Basterds

Tarantino likes to show women in the strong light. Here, Laurent fills that role as Shosanna. A teenager girl who escaped from the ''The Jew Hunter'' to become a strong, beautiful, independent, hard working woman. The scene where Shosanna breaks down at the dinner table after a long tense scene was chilling.

Runners up
Vera Farmiga(The Orphan)
Katie Featherston(Paranormal Activity)

Director of the year: Neill Blomkamp-District 9
Not only did Blomkamp direct District 9, he was also a writer on it. I tend to respect directors more who write the script as well as direct it. District 9 was one of the most touching sci-fi films I've ever seen. I never care so much about the outcome of characters as much as I did here. It was a unpredictable roller coaster ride. District 9 was original, and not many films today are. I look forward to seeing what other projects Mr Blomkamp will unleash.

Runners up
Wes Anderson(Fantastic Mr Fox)
Zack Snyder(Watchmen)
