Thoughts on Spider-Man 4 being cancelled and the future of the franchise

I was shocked to hear that Spider-Man 4 was canned early on this week, especially with the amount of money this franchise has racked in at the box office. With the mistakes of Spider-Man 3 and the disagreements followed by the delay, both Sony and Sam Raimi parted ways. Sony is planning on a reboot, where Parker is back in High School.

I gotta be honest, I'm quite trilled with this news, but it does have it's cons too and leaves many questions open for debate. I'm going to give you my 2 cents on this whole scenario and where I'd like to see the franchise go.

The main problem with rebooting this franchise again is you can't repeat what the first Raimi film did. Begin the film with Peter Parker going back to high school after the summer. He has had his power for a few months now and the only bad guys he's ever caught were petty thieves. This way you don't have to go into the origin story once again. The Incredible Hulk reboot pulled this off perfectly.

The villain should not be Green Goblin. It should be someone who has not been featured in any of the films yet. I vote Lizard. I'd like the first Spider-Man film to be animalistic.

My main problem with Raimi's franchise was the never ending problems between Peter and Mary-Jane. This was fine in the first film, but I grew tired of it by the second. Feature Mary-Jane as a background love interest, but don't push her to the foreground till the second film.

One major thing that was absent in Raimi's Spider-Man was the wisecracks Spider-Man would let off during a fight. This is one of the main personality traits of the webslinger and the fact that it wasn't present astounded me.

Putting Peter back in school is a fantastic idea. The first Spider-Man whipped him out so fast that you never got to see more characters like Flash Thompson, who played important roles in the development of Peter as a person.

This is the direction I'd like to see the franchise go so far. Maybe in a few weeks I'll give you a list of what directors and actors I'd like to see in the franchise.
