82nd Oscar nomination thoughts

Do you smell that? I do...I smells like the Oscars are getting close and when they get close, the nominations like to pop up. I shall posts the nominations below, followed by my thoughts on each category.

BEST PICTURE:
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air

Two films that I didn't expect to make it into this category, District 9 and Up. I'm more surprised by Up because it's already been nominated for animated feature film. I don't think Avatar deserves the win, but it's nice to see it there as well as Inglorious Basterds. I'd like to see Up or District 9 grab this one.

DIRECTING:
Kathryn Bigelow - The Hurt Locker
James Cameron - Avatar
Lee Daniels - Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
Jason Reitman - Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino - Inglourious Basterds

This is another nice and sweat category that has included more main stream films, then artsy crap. I love Reitman, but I didn't like Up in the Air. This is where I wouldn't mind seeing Avatar win, but to honest, Kathryn Bigelow or Tarantino deserve to walk away with the Oscar.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE:
Jeff Bridges - Crazy Heart
George Clooney - Up in the Air
Colin Firth - A Single Man
Morgan Freeman - Invictus
Jeremy Renner - The Hurt Locker

I've been hearing some nice things about Colin Firth in A Single Man, but I haven't seen it. I'm going for Jeremy Renner, who gave a fantastic performance in The Hurt Locker.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE:
Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side
Helen Mirren - The Last Station
Carey Mulligan - An Education
Gabourey Sidibe - Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia

I haven't seen any film from this category, so color me speechless.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:
Matt Damon - Invictus
Woody Harrelson - The Messenger
Christopher Plummer - The Last Station
Stanley Tucci - The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz - Inglourious Basterds

Christoph Waltz, nuff said!

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:
Penelope Cruz - Nine
Vera Farmiga - Up in the Air
Maggie Gyllenhaal - Crazy Heart
Anna Kendrick - Up in the Air
Mo’Nique - Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire

Even though I wasn't a huge fan of Up in the Air, I did enjoy Anna Kendrick's performance very much and her banter with Clooney with most entertaining. I'm rooting for this young actress.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM:
Coraline
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Princess and the Frog
The Secret of the Kells
Up

I know deep down that Up will win this and I don't have a problem with that, but behind tit all, I want Fantastic Mr. Fox to win.

There are a few more categories, but these are the main ones I'm interested in talking about.
