Iron Man 2 review

I LOVED the first Iron Man film. I'd put it in my top 5 favourite comic book adaptions of all time. It's up there with the likes of The Dark Knight, Watchmen and Kick-Ass, so there was no doubt I was going to be super excited for Iron Man 2. Hell, the trailers sold me and I even bought an Iron Man 2 poster for my bedroom my wall. I'm a fucking nerd....

Plot

The plot is perfect in the sense of how the story should go after Tony Stark(Robert Downey Jr) confessed he was the man behind the suit to the world. The government is the first to step up, declaring that Stark should hand over the suit as it's a weapon and a treat to the U.S. Also, Ivan Vanko, wants revenge because he believes his father was robbed by Tony's Dad, Howard Stark, who once worked with Ivan's father, Anton, on the arc reactor.

The Good

Robert Downey Jr delivers another fantastic performance as Tony Stark, who is witty, charming and grows a larger ego with all the extra found fame. Downey really carried this film on his back and made things work on so many levels. One of the most positive things about the first Iron Man film was the chemistry between Downey and Gwyneth Paltrow(Pepper Potts). That chemistry returns and made a lot of the scenes worth watching. And I'm not a guy that likes romantic garbage in my comic book films, but these two just work off each other so well, it's appealing.

The new villain introduced is Whiplash/Ivan Vanko, played wonderfully by Mickey Rourke. Whiplash is a cold man who unleashes himself while pulling no punches. He is one bad mother fucker with silly hair. Another new player to the game is Black Window/Natalia Romanova(Scarlett Johansson) who does enough to show how much of a badass she is. You don't find out much about her, just that she's a spy for SHIELD, which I didn't mind too much because I saw enough of her *wink* to keep me pleased.

Another thing this film does right is action. The action is much better this time around due to War Machine and the many droids built by Justin Hammer and Whiplash. I felt the first film lack adversaries, which didn't give a lot of room to see the suit in action and it's functions. Of course with action like Iron Man, you need amazing CGI. ILM delivers top notch effects which don't disappoint.

The Bad

I'm not going to lie, I walked out if Iron Man 2 disappointed. Not Spider-Man 3 disappointed mind you, because if it was, I would've caused quite a stir by falling to the floor, crying like a little bastard. The major problem with Iron Man 2 is the pacing, it's all over the place. You get some action maybe 30 minutes into the film, then no action till the end and the time it gets to that awesome action scene, you just don't care because you weren't buzzed up for it. Nothing gets you pumped, nothing builds you towards the action, nothings screams ''If this scene kicked so much ass, then the last battle must be outstanding''. Don't get me wrong, the last battle delivers, but nothing before that got me excited for it.

The first Iron Man had it's fair share of comedy, and so does the sequel...A little too much in fact. Comedy comes from scenes that shouldn't be funny and because of this, you can take what your seeing seriously. One scene in particular as a drunk Tony in the Iron Man suit at his birthday, which is funny, I liked it, but then the scene should of been serious after something occurs, but the comedy just keeps piling on. Justin Hammer(Sam Rockwell) is another villain who is introduced, just comes off a dumb comedic character. You wonder how this guy is even up there with Tony Stark to being with.

I was looking forward to War Machine so much and he came off as failure in my eyes. First off, there wasn't enough time given to James Rhodes(Don Cheadle). We learn absolutely nothing new about him. All I know is, he is a Colonel at the Air Force. Due to the lack of character, I had a lack of interest for the man behind the new suit of armor.

Overall

Iron Man 2 was worth checking out, it's solid and you should go see it if you enjoyed the first film. I might go see it again sometime down the line....Or Kick-Ass for the 5th time. I mean, there is nothing rememberable about Iron Man 2 and that is where it falls flat on his metal ass.

Score-Barely scrapes by with a 7/10

The Destroyer from Thor gets snapped!

The Destroyer is a forged suit of armor sent by Loki to kill Thor and will appear in the up and coming Thor film, which is scheduled to be released in May 6th 2011.

The suit of armor is pretty darn faithful to how it does in the comics.

I've read peoples responses saying it looks like something from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but seeing this monster in action is going to be something great, if done right of course.

Not much is going on in this teaser poster, but what do you expect? It's just a teaser poster, but we do have some info about the forthquel.....Yes you heard it here first folks...FORTHQUEL, from Wes Craven:

“We have fun with the idea of endless sequels, or “sequelitis” as Kevin calls it in the script. Sid goes through these three horrendous things, and Stab was based on those horrible things. And then they’ve been taken by a studio and run into the ground in a series of sequels. She has been off by herself and living her own life, and she’s even written a book that has gotten a lot of critical acclaim. She’s kind of put her life back together in the course of these 10 years. But, certainly, there would be no Scream without Ghostface, so she has to confront him again, but now as a woman who has really come out the darkness of her past.” … “This is a film about the progress of, at this point, three core characters, and how all of these events have changed their lives, and how the events in their lives have been reflected in the movies around them, which they might like or might really not like at all. I think that makes it really different.”

Sounds pretty much like the last few flicks. I hope something new gets added to this forth installment to keep it fresh.

Buried teaser poster

I'm loving this new teaser poster for Buried starring Ryan Reynolds who stars as Paul Conroy, that gets buried by Iraqi insurgents. The film went down well at Sundance and got picked up by Lionsgate.

I'm slightly claustrophobic, so I can imagine this film will have an effect on me.

Chris Evans on Captain America

Chris Evans has a huge task ahead of him. Not only will he be playing Captain America, but ''The Losers'' star will have be play the leader to heroes such as Iron Man and Thor, which will really test the acting chops of Evans. Recently Evans spoke about the role:

It is a big responsibility. I'm a little scared, to be honest. I'd be lying if I said anything else, and I have no problem being honest about that. It's intimidating. It's a big responsibility and you want to do your best work. I'm not quite sure what else to say. It was a challenging process for me, trying to decide whether or not to do it. I came down on the side of going for it because I really think Marvel is doing some great things these days, the script is great and it's going to be a fun character to play. He's a wonderful character, just as a man, aside from the comic hero background. If it was just a story about the man, Steve Rogers, I'd be really interested. He's an incredibly noble, honest, selfless man, and those are qualities that I think people can aspire to and look up to.

Evans also said this:

This is obviously going to be a very time-consuming ordeal, not just with Captain America, but with The Avengers. They'll shoot back to back.

I didn't know both films would be shooting back-to-back. This will be a long road for Chris, but at least he'll be ready to jump right into the Avengers right away.

Kick-Ass gets ass-kicked!

The Box Office numbers are in and Kick-Ass hits second place with 19mil. That's not good. First place goes to How To Train Your Dragon, bringing in 20mil. Not a huge difference between the two, but Dragon has been out for a month now.

I know kids flicks always take in more money, but Kick-Ass was getting a great word of mouth for the past couple of weeks and should of taken in 30mil or more. Iron Man 2 is released at the end of this month, so I hope Kick-Ass can take in more money before then, because if not, we won't be seeing a sequel.

And the director of The Avengers is....

Joss Wheadon, creator and writer of TV shows such as Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse and Firefly, who's also been involved in writing some X-Men comics has been given the directing job of The Avengers. The dude certainly has an impressive resume, but can he take on a huge picture such as The Avengers?

The Avengers will consist of Iron Man(Robert Downey Jr), Captain America(Chris Evans), The Hulk(Don't know if Edward Norton will be returning), Thor(Chris Hemsworth) and Nick Fury(Samuel L Jackson).

At this point I'm indifferent about this news. I did love Firefly and Serenity so I'm willing to stay positive about this decision.

Plot details for Harold and Kumar 3

I love the Harold and Kumar flicks. It's nothing but random off beat comedy. And let's be honest, who doesn't like seeing Neil Patrick Harris as a sex crazed drug induced version of himself.

I didn't think the 3rd installment would be going ahead after Kal Penn got hired at the White House, but recently his job ended there and it's time to saddle up to play Kumar again.

Plot:

"Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) are now in their 30s and no longer on speaking terms. Harold is a married, drug-free, Wall Street executive who lives in a beautiful home. Kumar is single, still lives in the same place, and has recently had his medical license suspended for smoking marijuana. The pair are reunited when a package intended for Harold arrives at their old apartment and Kumar delivers it to his house. While there, in a pot-related mishap, Kumar burns down a Christmas tree grown by Harold's father-in-law, requiring the two to go out in search of a replacement.

Does the madness ever stop when these two are together? I think not.

Joe Johnston talks about casting Captain America

Since the casting of Chris Evans as Captain America, we really haven't heard much about the casting from the director, Joe Johnson. But now he's made some comments about the casting:

"Casting Captain America is really casting two roles... Steve Rogers before and after the transformation from 98 pound weakling to perfect physical specimen. I can't divulge how we're going to do it, but the performance will be Chris Evans from beginning to end," Johnston said.

"actor playing Captain America has to embody that backstory and let it inform his understanding of his new self. One of the interesting aspects of the character is the effect that kind of total transformation would have on the his psyche. It gives the character more dimension and the actor playing him a wider range of interesting choices."

Sounds like Evans has quite the acting challenge in front of him. I'm excited to see the Cap for the first time bursting on to the battle field as he shows he's new strength and speed.

Star Wars Episode II: Hilarious review

If you hate the Star Wars prequels, then you might be that person who loves hearing people ripping it to shreds. I don't hate the prequels...I can watch episode 3. Anyway, some awesome guy has done a 90 minute review on Episode 2: Attack Of The Clones. It's fucking funny and you may laugh too, like me by clicking here.

Nerdgasm: Star Wars Galactic State Of Mind

This Saturday I'm off to my first Star Wars convention where I shall be surrounded by Jedi and Sith Lords. Also appearing, will be such cast members as David Prowse(Darth Vader), Kenny Baker(R2-D2), Jeremy Bulloch(Boba Fett), Caroline Blakiston(Mon Mothma) and Dermot Crowley(General Madine).

I hope to take many pictures and video so I can put on this site.

Kick-Ass review

Kick-Ass

Directed by Matthew Vaughn

Starring: Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloe Moretz, Nicolas Cage and Mark Strong

Plot

Dave Lizewski is just an average kid who glides through life. As a huge comic book fan, Dave one day he asks himself why hasn't anyone dawned a costume to save people. Dave decides to be the one to battle crime on the streets by dressing up in a wet suit and calling himself Kick-Ass. Kick-Ass realizes soon enough that he's not the only superhero in town as he befriends Big Daddy, Hit Girl and Red Mist.

Good

I have so much great things to say about this film. It's funny, witty, insane, violent, but at the same time you care about these characters. This works because we are the Kick-Ass character. At some point we wish we could do a lot more than just stand around doing nothing as people get mugged, shot, stabbed etc. This makes us click with this character right away.

While our protagonist has the name ''Kick-Ass'', he doesn't do the most of the ass kicking. Hit-Girl does. She is a young kid who swears, kills and is a total badass who steals the show. One person who surprised be a lot was Nic Cage. He was fantastic and owned his role. Not only was he funny, the guy has one scene in particular where he just comes off as a total brute.

Strong and Plasse worked off each other very well. Every scene they had came off hilarious. What can I say, the casting was perfect and not one person let me down in their role. Everyone put 110% into it.

Bad

I'm really reaching deep into the barrel to find something I didn't like about this. The only thing that bugged me was the character pacing. While each character gets their moment to shine, some people disappear for awhile and you forget all about them. But like I said, that's reaching deep.

Overall

This is one hell of a fun film that shouldn't be missed by you or anyone else. The reason why we go to the movies is to be entertained and Kick-Ass is full blown entertainment.

Scott Pilgrim vs the world teaser trailer

This is it, the trailer I've been waiting to see most for this year. It's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

I think this trailer is AWESOME. I love the all ''pows'' ''whips'' and ''kpoks'' popping up as the action takes place. As for the action, it looks over the top insane. I first had doubts about Cera playing Scott, but he seems to fit into the role very well judging from the trailer.

BIG NEWS: The Human Torch is Captain America

Chris Evans is a lucky fellow. First he lands the role of The Human Torch, then as Nick Grant in Push and now Mr Evans will be play Captain America...Has he rubbed off of Ryan Reynolds recently?

At first I was hoping for an unknown actor, but when I heard that Channing Tatum and some other guy from some show was up for the role, I was rooting the hell out of Evans. When it comes down to it, I don't think Evans is a bad choice at all. The more I think about it, the more I like it.

And Smurfette is...Katy Perry?

I don't know much about The Smurfs. I think I can name two of them, Papa Smurf and Smurfette. Jonathan Winters will voice Papa Smurf. I've been kinda curious to know who'd be voicing Smurfette, but now my curiosity can rest because the voice has been cast. Voicing the blue bombshell will be none other than pop singer, Katy Perry...Wait, what?

Are you telling me instead of casting a trained voice actor or even an actress for the part, they cast Katy Perry? Kids films always make a nice Box Office intake and I'm pretty sure kids don't really give a crap about who's voicing who. So why someone as random as Perry?

Oh well. I'm going to go think about other things now, like melting butter in the sun!
